Description

So, you’re thinking of starting your first Minecraft server? As a keen server owner since 2018, I’ve put together an easy starting guide on how to get your first Minecraft server.

Hosting your own or renting a hosted server?

The first question is are you going to host your own server at home? Or will you be getting a hosted server for a monthly price?

Hosting your own Minecraft server

Firstly let’s look at self hosted servers. You will need a little technical knowledge. Although there are many guides to guide you through. Putting that aside you will also require a device such a pc with enough ram to run your world and players. This usually is 2gb of ram on a very small scale and going up to 12gb for a larger server with many players.

You will also have to have your pc running with the server on. If your pc switches off, then your server can not be joined, which isn’t ideal for an online multiplayer server. It also means that this pc will also have a sole usage for the server. As by using it you will take away any memory and usage its using for the server.

The last thing to note is that you will also be having to share your IP address for others to join. When creating a server you need to open a port so that people can access your server. how ever this can lead to risks of Ddoss attacks or worse. So make sure to look up ways to secure your network or only share your address with people you know.

Renting a hosted Minecraft server

This is personally my preferred method as it takes out a lot of the stress and requires little to no technical knowledge. Basically a company has got Minecraft servers ready to rent on their servers. They then allocate you a certain amount of ram per server (price dependant) and usually a player limitation.

For example a smaller package may only include 2gb ram of memory and 10 players slots. Where as a larger package may cost more but provide you 10gb ram and 100 player slots for others to join. This is because the more ram is allocated to your server, the better it will perform with more players or other add-ons.

Setting up a hosted server is easy as most hosting companies will provide you an easy setup method allow with many guides. You will how ever have to pay a monthly fee for your server. How ever I feel its worth the money as the hosting service will keep your server secure and provide your with additional extra in most cases. Such as the ability to create a domain for players to join rather than a numerical ip number.

E.g. your server joining IP & port might be 12.3.12.4.2:2345. How ever most hosting providers will also let your use a subdomain such as mycoolserver@serverhosting.com. This can be used as the joining address instead.

Deciding on the server type (server jar)

When you first start your server you will need to choose what type of server you want to use. This is because there is different Minecraft versions, and its important you know what server type lets what device on to join.

Bedrock & MCPE Edition Server

Bedrock edition servers allow the following Minecraft devices to join:

• Xbox (Only using a mobile phone app)
• Playstation (Only using a mobile phone app)
• Mobile
• PC (Only Windows 10 Edition)

These version of Minecraft that are played on those devices will let players join a Bedrock edition server. Java can not join this type of server.

Java Edition Server

A java edition server is the original Minecraft edition. It is only playable from a PC using Java edtion. Java has many sub types of server and can not be used or joined by bedrock edition players, unless you create a cross-play server using plugins.

• Java Vanilla
  This is the original survival un modded version of Minecraft on java edition. Here you can add plugins or mods to your server.
• Java Spigot/Bukkit
  These are two different types of servers that allow plugins to be used. The plugins have to be specific to each type unless using the paper version.
• Java Paper
  This is an optimised server type that is better for servers holding more players. It also lets you add either spigot or Bukkit plugins.
• Java Forge/Fabric
  This version allows you to add mods but not plugins. Mods can be found from sites like curse forge or planet Minecraft.
• Java Sponge
  This is a version that can potentially support mods and some specific plugins. I personally have not had much luck but some say it does work.
• Java using Geyser & Floodgate plugins
  This is a server using spigot or paper version and utilising the 2 plugins that will allow both java and bedrock players to connect easily.

There are of course may other variations but these are the main ones that are usually used. Other variation of paper are also velocity, waterfall and other differently optimised Minecraft servers.

Different Minecraft versions

Not only should you know the edition your using, but Minecraft also comes in many version. The oldest starts at version 1.0 and works its way up with every update, eg 1.1 then 1.2 and we are currently on 1.19.4 as of this latest update. With every update the number grows. Also players using outdated versions can not join newer ones, and visa versa.

Configuring your Minecraft server

Once you have chosen your preferred server type, its time to configure it to suit your likings. Please note that I will be guiding through a hosted server configuration. If you are self hosted, you can also do so by changing your config settings and saving them on your server.

I recommend turning your server off when making changes, then using your server dashboard panel. Look for settings or server config. Click on this option. Here you will find all your servers main options. You can choose the game mode, whether the game mode is forced in players, View distance and much more.

I suggest taking some time to go through all the settings and changing them to suit the way you want to play on your server. I also recommend keeping the view distance as quite low to save on your server resources.

Managing server files

If your self hosting your server, you have direct access to your server files for any changes, what if your using a hosted server thought?

All server hosts will provide you with some sort of FTP file access from your dashboard or multicraft dashboard (a system commonly used by server hosts for clients). You will be given your login credentials for this (often the same password as your multi craft if that’s what your using) and you can log in to access, edit or delete any files.

Alternatively you can download a free app called FileZilla. Using this you can log in remotely to your server files and manage them that way from your pc or laptop.

Adding Plugins on Java servers

As previously mentioned, only certain java servers can use plugins. These include spigot, Bukkit, paper or Sponge in some cases.

Plugins give you many extra features such as anti cheats, mini games, admin tools and can effect most part of a Minecraft game apart from the textures. For textures you will need a mod or texture pack uploaded.

Bukkit plugins are only compatible with Bukkit servers. Spigot plugins are only usable on spigot servers and paper can use both Bukkit and spigot plugins.

If you’re using a server host that uses multi craft, its very easy to add them. On the left hand side of your multi craft dashboard, you will find a plugins tab. Using this tab you can filter through available plugins, add, remove or change them accordingly.

Alternatively using the ftp file access you can upload or remove plugins directly from the plugin directory, found on your server files.

Be aware that plugins are also version sensitive. For instance one plugins might be for Bukkit servers but only work for up to 1.16 servers

Adding mods to Minecraft servers

Mods are a really fun way of bringing your Minecraft game to life, the include total game changing mechanics such as resources, items and the way the game is programmed.

These mods will only work on modded server types such as forge or fabric. They allow the use of mods with normal Minecraft worlds. How ever one thing to keep in mind that when adding mods, they must be very specific to the game version.

For example. If you run a Java forge 1.12.2 version server. You will also need all your mods to match the same version and be usable by forge 1.12.2 otherwise they will crash the game.

Uploading Bedrock add-ons to a server

Adding bedrock add-ons can sometimes be a bit tricky, but never impossible. The best and easiest way to do this, is by adding in your Minecraft world single player. The exporting the world files and uploading them to your server files.

Adding a discord for players to connect, chat and plan

So once you have started your Minecraft server, its time to advertise and create a place for your server community to chat and plan. I suggest discord for this as its easy to set up a discord server and add your friends or new players.

The way discord works is, you get a free discord server (think of this as your group). You then add channels to your discord server such as chat, fun pics, server suggestions therefor creating a place with different channels for people to communicate.

This helps to create a community for your server as they can chat whilst they are logged in and playing and even when they aren’t.

Where to advertise a Minecraft server?

There are a number of places you can advertise your Minecraft server, here are my following suggestions:

• Different discord advertising channels
• Creating a trailer for YouTube
• Advertising on TikTok

Optimising your server for high player counts

Once you start to grow your player count, you might start noticing some lag on your server. So here are some tips on optimising your server to resolve this.

• Choosing an optimised server type like paper.
• Using optimising plugins.
• Decreasing your server view distance to 6-8 chunks.
• Remove un needed or un used plugins or mods.
• Replace badly coded plugins.
• Create a bungee cord network to support multiple servers

Conclusion

When choosing to start a Minecraft server. There are many things to consider, especially when purchasing one for your kids. This is because there are so many variations of Minecraft, so by using this guide you can now identify what Minecraft type you play o0n as well as the server needed to support it.

The premium plugin is one of the best plugins used to bring lifelike npc’s to your server. It not only allows you to add npc but it allows you to fully customise them and bring them to life!

How To Fix Citizen Plugin On a Server?

So the fix is fairly simple but not always well found as an answer.

The citizens will only work on the latest sub version of each Minecraft’s main version. Feeling confused?

Let me explain. So when they release a version of Minecraft, they update citizens, for example when 1.19.2 releases. That’s the latest version of 1.19. How ever, if they then release 1.19.3 then citizens updates to that, meaning that it will no longer work on 1.19.2 as there is a newer version in the 1.19 series.

To explain even further, once 1.20 is released, citizens would remain working on the latest version on 1.19 which is currently 1.19.3 but it won’t work on any earlier 1.19 versions.

It will continue to work for the least version of 1.20, 1.19, 1.18 and so on.

There for the fix is to update your server to the latest version!

Even using via version or via backwards it still wouldn’t run on the server until I updated from 1.19.2 to 1.19.3.

As it doesn’t require major changes like moving from a entire different version to another, eg 1.19 > 1.20.

This means the move over for your server shouldn’t have any effects on other plugins.

How to Safely Test The Newer Minecraft version On Server?

If you want to run a test first (I highly suggest this) then these are the steps I suggest taking.

This is if you have 1 server, if you have a test one, then simply copy the server from one to the other and test on the second.

• Download and install FileZilla.
• Connect to FileZilla with your servers FTP information.
• Take a copy of every single file and folder in your server and upload it to a folder to your PC.
  (This will make an exact replica of your server including every file, configuration and all player data.
• Now change the server over to the newer version and start it up.

At this point it will work, or it will crash.

If it crashes, no sweat. Follow the steps below to restore it.

• Stop your server.
• Change version to the previous one.
• Save your settings.
• Connect to your server with FileZilla with your FTP information and delete all the files on the server.
• Move over all the files and folders from the backup folder you created earlier.
• Start the server once files have moved over.

Now you can start and it will re install your old server in the previous version.

What To Do Now If It Didnt Work?

At this point, provided that you still want to use the citizen plugin, its time to find out the plugin on your server current that’s causing the problem.

This is done by re doing the last test to move over to the newer version (including taking the backup first) but then removing plugins one at a time. Once the server starts you will find out what plugin is causing the issue in updating.

At this point it’s your choice on what plugin is more worth it to you, citizens or the plugin that won’t let you update version.

What Is Dynmap?

First of all let me explain what dynmap is and does. Its is a google earth style of viewing your server live. It also shows your players locations, names and status as well as other markers and land claims depending on the integrations your using. The dynmap plugins works well with many other well known plugins.

You can install the plugin, and after some simple setup have a webpage connected to your server that you can share to view the live map. It not only shows you a birds eye view version if 2D but also a 3D version, a cave version and optionally your nether and end worlds.

How To Download & Install Dynmap

1. Visit the download page for the dynmap plugins and download dynmap.
2. Upload the plugin to your plugin folder using your plugin installer or FileZilla & your FTP file access
3. Start your server, once started then stop it again and go to the FTP file access to view server files.
4. Open your plugin folder and open the dynmap folder.
5. Click “edit” on the configuration.txt file.
6. Change the resolution in the deftemplatesuffix to vlower or loweres.
7. Change the number for the webserver-port to any number over 1024.
8. Change the image-format to jpg.
9. Save and start the server back up.
10. Go to your server console area and type:
    dynmap fullrender >worldname<
    The name has to match what your world file is saved as.
11. Once fully rendered, to visit the map look up in the console data and it will display your servers IP, followed by a colon and then the port your created. Paste this into a web browser to view your page.
    This will looking something like this example: 23.123.12:1354

How to add bounties to your Minecraft server easily with easy setup and allow your players to set bounties on each other.

How Does Lucky Bounties Work?

This free and easy to use plugin will connect with vault and create an economy based around bounties for players. Meaning that any player can set a bounty on another player’s head with the easy-to-use GUI. The install is easy and there is little to no configuration.

Players can set any items as a bounty on the player, once the player dies, they drop the bounty, and the winning player gets to collect it.

This plugin required Vault to work.

How To Install the Lucky Bounties Plugin

• First download the plugin from the spigot lucky bounties page.

• Stop your server and log into your FTP account or app like FileZilla and open your plugin folders.

• Now upload the plugin your just downloaded to your server. Then start your server back up.

Please be aware that you may need to restart the plugin once in-game, the plugin warns you that this is due to the vault plugin starting after the lucky bounty’s plugin on the console. You an do this by typing

How To Use the Lucky Bounties Plugin

Once installed there is no more configuration its fairly simple, it doesn’t require permissions as the commands will work for normal players and anyone with op will get the extra power to clear bounties.

To open the bounties GUI menu, you type /bounties

This will give you a list of players to choose from, indicated by their head.

Set Bounty as a Normal Player

This will then display like the picture below if you’re a normal un-oped player. Here you will see if the player has any bounties on him indicated by the items in the inventory (the calcium in this case) and you have the shard that you can use to set a bounty on this player.

Once you press set bounty you can then add your bounty in the middle of the inventory and confirm the bounty.

Extra Admin Access

If you are op (server operator) on the server, you will also get the clear bounties option when you do the /bounties command. This will clear any bounties on a player.

Conclusion

If you’re after a simple, lightweight plugin to add bounties to your server then this is the one. Its free easy to setup and works right off the bat, no setup required, and people can start setting a bounty on each other on your server straight away.

We all love minigames and especially when you can get your own server and have your own for you and your friends to play on.

How Do Minigame Plugins Work on a Minecraft Server

Plugins are extra files you can add to a server to create new and exiting features for you and your friends to use on servers. Some plugins provide anti cheat features, cool additions like guns or just extra commands.

So when you join the well known servers like hypixel or bedrock servers like lifeboat network you’re playing on lots of differently developed minigame plugins.

This means that if you rent your own server you can also use such plugins and have games like chess, murder mystery and other fun plugins that we will go through now.

Best Minecraft Minigame Plugins

So lets get started with the Minigame plugins, these range from 1.8 to 1.19.2 but to run them all, you’re able to using a 1.17 server and using the viaversion or viabackwards plugin to allow older and newer version on.

1. Murder Mystery MInigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.17

This minigame plugins gives you the full murder mystery experience on your server and all for free! This includes roles like Murderer, Detective or just the normal players. Each role gets different perks of weapons and the idea is pretty simple, kill the murderer, try to stay alive or if you are the murderer to find everyone before the time runs out.

You get a great scoreboard on the right that displays all the live information and is super easy to set up like all plugins plugins. Using their intake GUI you can setup your arena in 10 minutes and even use free maps they provide.

2. MineChess Minigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.19

One of my favourite plugins, the Minechess plugin gives you chess but in Minecraft! Not only is this easy to setup on your server. Including outbuilding boards and pieces and boards to join. But it also auto guides you with where to place your pieces and even follows all the chess rules.

It knowns when you’re in check, checkmate and also helps you from placing yourself in check mate. It has a scoring system on the right and a command to check your general score. This works well on multiple worlds using multiverse or even multiple boards on one world.

3. The Bridge Minecraft Minigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.17

If you haven’t heard of the bridge before, let me explain. Each team starts on either side of the bridge and the only place you can place or break blocks is in the void between the islands. To score the team has to get into the enemy base and jump into their portal to score.

Meaning that its a game of defence and offence by balancing trying to score with defending your base with your team mates. As with any plugins plugin this works really well for servers using multiverse or just one world.

Setup is easy and doesn’t take long, all is done in game and you even have a free map you can use which is also downloadable from their discord.

4. Paintball Battle MInigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.19

Another firm favourite of mine is the Paintball Battle minigame plugin and it works on 1.19 servers too which is a bonus!

This is a very well developed game with easy setup, which is all done in game with a great looking GUI and commands. It also has a great score board that you can also display with other plugins like holographic displays showing kill and score counts.

Teams of 2 will battle it out until your out of lives in any map you choose to create, you get perks that give you general bonuses or intake shops that you can use by collecting golden nuggets from other players deaths.

Using the in game shop you can get awesome new shooting methods like triple shot of even a nuke! A great addition to any Minecraft server.

5. Saber Factions Minigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.19

Faction plugins and servers have been around for some time, which has given them time to progress and get better and better. With Saber faction plugin you get the full factions experience with just one plugin!

That’s faction claims, banks, permissions, checks for your teams and much much more. Used with an economy plugin such as vault it give you the bank features so other players in your faction can pay into your bank too.

Promote or demote players, grow your faction and become the top faction on your server! All with saber factions minigame plugin.

6. Iridium Skyblock Minigame Plugin 1.13 – 1.18

This is a plugin I have personally used for some time. The developer Peaches keeps this up to date with fixes and of course version updates (were possible). This is truly the best free Skyblock plugin for a Minecraft server and you will notice it reminds you of other well known Skyblock games you have likely played on bigger servers.

Fro island creation selectors to changing the biomes around for your island. This well developed plugin has all the well known Skyblock features and more.

7. Build Battle Minigame Plugin 1.8 – 1.17

This is a well known minigame plugin found on most big servers. With this you can play with friends strangers or even enemies and still have fun!

For those with creative minds this minigame allows you to build and compete against others in getting the best looking build from the suggested word. You usually get around 5 or 10 minutes and once every has finished building you get to vote for each others builds.

The minigame included everything you might expect including floor changing, free map to use, instruction video to setup and even works with citizens to give your players a floor changing NPC.

As even with plugins plugins this works well, is good or multi world servers and also is super easy to setup. Download by joining their discord and go to the download page.

8. Village Defence Plugin 1.8 – 1.17

One of my absolute favourite and one I use every year for the servers at Insomnia Gaming Festival. This allows you to create a zombie survival minigame on any map you want!

With its easy setup and GUI you can have an arena up in minutes and also use multiple arenas. The idea is that you have 10 villagers that you have to keep safe, and of course yourself. Waves of zombies come out in waves and get harder and harder as you go.

The best thing about this plugin is that it gives you in game shops that you can setup for players to use, including golems and wolfs they can buy and spawn in to help them. All prices and items can be set by you to make this a unique minigame for your server.

You also get a free map to use from the plugins discord and its a pretty good one too! And not to forget this can be played multiplayer but also in single player to see what wave you can’t too.

How Can Plugins Help Optimize My Server?

Minecraft itself is a complex game with many different things going on in what seems like an endless world. To make the world seems endless you can end up growing your world file massively with exploration causing the server to handle with the large file worse.

Alternatively having many players with active mods around them, animation, Redstone and whatever else will also stress the server out causing rubber-banding and general lag.

Plugins can help as the developers will usually look at a specific or general faults that could be improved or optimised and then creates a plugin to help with this. Before we get into this I just want to suggest using a Paper jar type for any servers that you plan on playing online with others, Paper servers come well optimized.

1. ClearLagg PLugin

1.8 – 1.16

ClearLagg is a simple but great plugin to have on any server. On first impressions it seems that its only used to pick up floating items, which is a good resource in itself.

How ever when you look at the config and commands you realise you have a lot more configurability than you first thought. With this plugin you can limit hopper activity, red stone activity and many other well known lag causers.

You can limit mod spawnners and also find what chunks are causing lag to find the culprit. Provided is a tps and ram reader that can execute commands once limits are hit to save your server from crashing.

2. Fast Chunk Regenerator Plugin

1.16 – 1.19

Another way to optimise your server is to use a world re-generating plugin such as Fast Chunk Generator. The way this works is by loading chunks around you meaning your cpu or server cpu has less to deal with, rather than generating them as the player is moving it simply pre generates and just loads that part of the map.

With this plugin you can choose how many chunks to generate and has a tone of configurable options so you can make sure it runs smoothly what your world and really increase performance. It also works well for multiple worlds and it supports async chunk calls for Paper to maximize generation speed.

3. StackMob Plugin

1.16 – 1.19

The idea behind any stack mob plugin is to relieve the server by decreasing the amount of active mobs. All mobs have a cycle they follow meaning that one player may have multiple mobs around him all with different animations, noises or movement.

If you image a server has 20 players on around the world and each player could have 10 or more mobs all around them the server will start to struggle with loading everything.

There for to optimise the server you can stack your mobs into one. By this i mean any of the same mobs in a certain range of where will combine into 1 mob with a number on top indicating how many of the mobs you have available.

So now with mob farms or just normal farms rather than having 20, 30 or more mobs loaded up in the chunk your in, it will only need to load one of each mobs type. Suddenly you go from 20 players with for example 20 mobs of 4 kinds loaded around them player, equalling 400 different mobs running on the server at one time. With stack mob plugins this would be reduced down to 80 mobs loaded on the server.

4. LaggRemover Plugin

1.8 – 1.14

This might be an old plugin, but for those of you that use viaversion and viabackwards with older servers this is a fantastic way to reduce lag on servers.

Unlike ClearLagg this focuses more on chunks than entities, it also claims to be able to detect lag and stop it before it even becomes an issue. Unfortunately there has been more more update since 1.14 but if your running a version of that server or lower then i highly recommend trying this plugin to optimise your server.

Plugins for Minecraft servers allow you to do many different things, from anti cheats, player heads, minigames and more. There is always a plugin to suit your server need. So we have put together a list of the 10 best minecraft plugins that you can use for your 1.19 Minecraft server. For this we used a paper server so we can support either bukkit or spigot plugins.

10. Essentialsx Plugin

This plugins works well with 1.19 servers and can be download from the essentialsx site for the latest version plus extra add ons.

This plugins gives you hundreds of new commands to make normal commands shorter or just give you many more options to use in your server. Its very intuitive and makes administration, moderation and also functionality of the server much easier.

It provides features such as set home or tp home so players can easily set a home place and teleport back if needed.

You can set warps for your players to use along with tpa commands to let them teleport to each other. Meaning you don’t need extra plugins taking up more space on your server.

You can set and give player kits for the players that are accessible through commands that you can give to them. Full permission list here. Use a permissions plugins such as Luckperms to give your players the relevant permissions for commands.

This comes along with a full economy (requires vault) with pay player commands, sell to server commands and even sign posts you can enable to let your players create their own shops to buy and sell.

9. Geyser & Floodgate

Using the combination of both Geyser and floodgate you can easily and within 15 minutes have Bedrock players playing on your Java server. It provides some amazing code translating between Java and Bedrock that makes gameplay non lagy and very playable.

At first you used to have to have a java account and sign in but now with the plugin called floodgate this authorisation is done automatically and means you don’t need a java account and can simply log in with Bedrock.

The only thing you really need to do once installed is change some configuration to match your IP and Port for your server and your good to go! Brilliant plugin for any 1.19 server.

8. Villager Market Plugin

Villager market is a great 1.19 plugin that gives you not only the ability to create server shops. But also player shops that they can use to buy or rent to sell their own items.

Its easy configuration means that not only are server shops easy to set up, but also shops t rent take minutes to setup and price, and are easy for the players to set up too.

One of the best things about this plugin is the easy ability to sell commands, by charging for a command and then executing the command if the player has enough currency. It works great with vault and essentials or any other economy plugin.

You can also use this to give free kits that have time delays or limits to how many a player can buy and its super versatile for any 1.19 server.

7. Weapon Mechanics Gun Plugin

If your looking for guns on your Minecraft server but don’t want to use mods, install forge and have to go through all that faf then this is the perfect plugin for you.

By simply installing the gun plugin on a 1.19 server it will automatically work with no more installation or configuration needed. Its that easy.

Guns are all available by using the plugin commands, you can find our previous post here which included the commands for the guns. These range from pistols to Ak’s. Grenades to air strikes and all with ammo to use as well.

This works well with shaders installed also and can really turn up the level of excitement on your server. This can also be used with the villager market plugins command sell feature and sell weapons from the villager for a price! It even displays in the menu nicely so players can see what gun they will buy from the shop.

6. Viaversion & Viabackwards Plugins

Have you always wandered how some servers allow all version on no matter how old or new? This can be easily done by installing either viabackwards or viaversion to allow older or newer Minecraft version on to your server.

This can be great for servers that rely on a plugin that hasn’t updated, servers using geyser and floodgate for the version switch over, and generally just to allow more players on to your server.

This 1.19 plugin will work from the box and there is no configuration or setup required, simply download and upload to your server and your done.

ViaVersion will allow anyone that has a newer version than your server to join, for example if your server is 1.16. A player using 1.19 can still join and play.

Viabackwards allows you to let on players all the way back to 1.8, so even if the players are playing outdated Minecraft versions they can still join easily.

5. Saber Factions Minigame Plugin

Another great plugin for any 1.19 server. Saber factions gives you the complete factions experience for free! With one simple download you can get started on you world with factions, claims, banks, missions and much more.

Claims are clearly marked and you can even use the commands to find other ones near you, describe your faction and also full member control and permissions. With vault, an economy plugin and a small config change you can use the currency for factions also.

This 1.19 plugin also works with multiverse and having multiple worlds. Simply create one with factions and you can block the commands on the other worlds using a permissions plugin such as luckperms.

4. Mine Chess Minigame Plugin

If you are a fan of chess or simply ant a fun 2 player game for your 1.19 serer then the MineChess minigame plugin is the one for you. This gives you the full chess experience full with automation and assistance with playing.

With only 4 commands you can set up and auto build a complete chess board to play in seconds once setup. Lobbies are easy to set and you can use this with multiple worlds using multiverse.

The pawns can be selected on your turn and will show you the spaces they can go too. Each turn is timed and you can also check your stats easy with a simple command.

3. Custom Items Plugin 1.19

This normally free plugin has released a free version allowing you to create 2 free custom items for your Minecraft server.

These can have different abilities attached, come as different items and it has a great amount of in game configurability to it.

All editing can be done in game with their easy to use GUI and can really help customize your server with items that players can use or find else where.

2. Grim Anti Cheat Plugin

If you are looking for a free to use and open source anti cheat then you will be happy to find that grim ticks the boxes.

With a simply installation it will now keep track of all players and even give you a display of anything results found.

It intuitively also shows you the client brand so you can see if the players are using well known exploit version.

You can find many positive reviews on the download page on spigot and so far i have used it and its done a great job detecting cheaters and also not causing much lag on the server.

1. Grief Prevention Plugin 1.19

One of my favourite and most used plugin for any 1.19 server. As the title suggest its saves you from grief, and this is true and tested by myself. Firstly it provides an easy claim system to make sure your plot is safe. This can be done by placing your first chest or using a golden shovel (configurable to other items) to mark your area.

Any item, crop, mob or frame is now complete defended against tnt, creepers, stealing and grief of any kind. This also stops many exploits with other plugins that allow pushed or cannon tnt to enter.

Not only will tnt explosions above sea level be completely disabled but creepers will not cause any damage to any block ever again.

To put it simply, it stops any grief, stealing (from secured plots) and stops mobs being used as weapons, as well as other well known “exploding” items.

So this is my top 10 list of Minecraft plugins for a 1.19 server. Hopefully with the range of plugins you can use more than one and many have been tested with multiverse and geyser too. Meaning that many work as cross platform or on multiple worlds.

Why You Might Need To Update a Plugin

With all plugins they will receive regular updates, this can be due to a variety of or reasons such as security patches, upgrades to the plugin or Minecraft version updates.

Security Updates

Sometimes there can be security flaws that can be found in plugins with testing. Once these become apparent or reported then the developers will usually I update the plugin and release a new version with the security issue patched.

New Features For The Plugin

When developers improve or add new features thy will need to release a new plugin version. This version will have all the updates, new features and potential improvements from the last version. 98% of the time they will simply update but on the very rare occasion a developer may re write the whole code. They will usually put a warning out if this is the case.

New Minecraft Versions

And of course when Minecraft releases newer versions such as 1.18, 1.19 ect the plugins often have to update too so it works on the newer version also. Plugins stay competitive by updating tot he new version as soon as possible so make sure to check for updates regularly.

How To Update Plugins On a Server

Step 1. Download the latest version of the plugin you are updating.

Step 2. Stop your server before updating any plugins.

Step 3. Go to your servers files either by the FTP file access or by login into your server with FileZilla. And open your plugins folder.

Step 4. Now you need to delete the plugin (.jar) file highlighted in orange. Don’t delete the plugins data file, highlighted in green. This is what holds all the information created by the plugin, thus has all the player progress and configuration from the plugin saved.

Step 5. Now upload the new updated plugin in the plugins folder to replace the old one you deleted.

Step 6. Now all you have to do is start your server and the plugin will be updated.

Final Thoughts

By updating the server plugins jar file you can retain all the plugin data that was created by the plugin. Meaning nothing gets lost in between updates. The new plugin will simply run off of the old data file created by the plugin and just run smoothly from there.
